Expansion Joint For Pumps – Consider Before Selection

There are certain things when one needs to replace a failed expansion joint. While defining the possible causes of failure of these joints, it is important to do everything in order to get it right for the first time. All the system requirement and components must be considered while choosing the expansion joints for pumping systems. By covering all the factors, these joints may influence reliable performance for the piping system.

Plan The Piping System

Before addressing the expansion joint, ensure the adjacent equipment and piping conforms to solid and good piping engineering practice. This means that the design and placement of the guides, support and anchors are important for the joints to function properly.

Movement of Joints

Since the pump flexible connectors and joints are employed to absorb lateral, axial and angular pipe movement and also vibration, there should be consideration for correct calculation of the movements. It is crucial that the correct coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is used in this regard.

Since the CTE varies greatly between the pipe materials, specific pipe material should be known. These variations can affect the calculated movement to a certain point that the pipe movement may greatly surpass the joint capacity when initial calculations show that they are beyond its limit.

Media That Is Pumped

Since new chemicals are processed every year, so determination of process media is also important. The media is one of the major determining factors for compatible elastomer selection.During the specifying process, material selection must not be compromised. Choosing marginal tube materials invites high replacement costs and is risky.

In the media, any abrasive material should be investigated since even minute amount of abrasive material at high velocity can wear the tube in a premature manner. Here a protective liner arch design should be investigated. Conservatism is the best policy since the compromised product can lead to fast failure and deterioration.
It is recommended to check the material properties and service joints carry the requirement certification to confirm the material certification matches the pump fluid.

Thus for smooth functioning of pumps its is recommended that one should check the selection criteria of these joints properly and carefully. For more details please visit at www.bosonengineers.co.in.
