A gate valve, opens by lifting a round or rectangular gate gives path to the fluid. The main feature of a gate valve is the sealing surfaces between the gate and seats are plain, so gate valves are used for a straight-line flow of fluid and where minimum restriction is desired. The gate faces are most commonly wedge-shaped. Gate valves are mainly used to permit complete flow of liquids, but gate valves cannot be used for regulating flow. When gate valve opens, the flow path is enlarged in a highly nonlinear way with respect to percent of opening. This means that flow rate does not change evenly with stem travel.
Gate valves are operated by a threaded stem which connects the actuator (e.g. handwheel or motor) to the gate. Two types of stem, non rising and rising stem, are used depending on which end of the stem is threaded. Bonnets are leak proof enclosure for the valve body. Gate valves may have a screw-in, union, or bolted bonnet. Bolted bonnet is used for larger valves and higher pressure applications.

- Like its name implies, the gate is lowered to cut off the path of flow.
- For use as an on/off valve (not suitable as a control valve).
- Little resistance to flow when fully open (allows smooth flow).
- Long stroke requires time to open and close; not suitable for quick operation.
