Flexible Gear Couplings And Its Fact

Coupling is a mechanical device which is used to connect two shafts together for the purpose of transmitting power from one shaft to another. No discontinuation of shafts is allowed during the operation, but however there are can be a slip or get disconnected when the torque limit is exceeded.

Choosing the correct coupling based on its applications and attributes will ensure more reliability and efficiency. Hence, one should carefully select, install and maintain couplings; as this could give substantial savings in the form of reduced maintenance costs and downtime.

Capacity Of These Couplings

Shafts which are collinear to each other are joined by a mechanical device to transmit power are known as Couplings. Angular misalignment of relativity of 4–5° are generally limited to gear couplings, whereas connection of two nominally coaxial shafts is only done by flexible gear coupling. These couplings can flex and adjust itself to accommodate the misalignment instantly to avoid any system failure.

Other couplings lose the power and flexibility after a couple of years where the power is lost in the process of frictional heat from continuous sliding and rolling of the parts at a high speed, but these flexible gear couplings work efficiently years after years resulting 99% of efficient work.

These couplings are available in two configurations which are Full Geared and Half Geared Half Rigid.

Full Geared Coupling – In this type of coupling, the halves are identical and consists of two hubs having external teeth on outer periphery and two outer sleeves having internal teeth on the inner periphery are bolted together. They usually accommodate more angular misalignment other than axial & Lateral as compared to other couplings.

Half Geared Half Rigid Coupling – In this type of coupling there is one half which is geared and the other one is rigid. This coupling is used for taking care of the angular misalignment and high torque transmitting.

Normally one would want such couplings to transmit only torque from one shaft to another without adding any additional reactions or bending movements which these couplings accommodate and achieves providing an efficient flow of smooth operation. Hence, the selection of type of couplings is very, very important for uninterrupted operation.
